Native California" magazine, Fall 2007 issue Twice As Good, or their acronym 2XG, is the professional name of the music duo
formed by Paul Anthony Steward (Son, born 1984) and Richard James Steward (Father, born 1951) from Elem Indian Colony in Clearlake
Oaks, CA on the shores of beautiful Clear Lake. Richard had grown up around music all his life, he learned to play guitar
and sing from his Mother, Priscilla. Priscilla had learned music from her cousin Hank Gonzalez. Hank & the Country Classics
was a favorite Country music singer of the Indian community around Clear Lake and Northern California. Later on, Hank taught
and shared music and performance tips to Paul & Rich, even shared the stage with them in Twice As Good’s early years.
Rich grew up admiring Country, Blues & Soul. He shared this music with his youngest Son, Paul. When Paul was a young teenager he showed a great interest in music. He had a
toy keyboard and could figure out and play melodies by ear. Richard taught Paul some keyboard chords and how to play guitar,
encouraging him to be a Lead Guitarist. Paul, inspired by B.B. King began imitating the Electric Blues Guitar he heard on
the radio and CD's, also practicing his vocals. Paul & Rich, inspired by the Blues Brothers, began performing house parties
and BBQ’s for friends and family, just the two of them. They had played
around with various bands in the beginning, gaining exposure and experience, working with an Indian group from Colusa Reservation
called “Red Man Blues” that had broken up but in May 2003 they debuted as "Twice As Good, 2XG" at Terry's
Southern BBQ in Santa Rosa, CA. Since then they have been all over the USA, independently released 4 albums, shared the stage
with many legends and famous artists, and continue to garner success and praise with Paul leading the band through flashy
show tunes, with soulful vocals, screaming guitar, and unbelievable stage presence. From the house parties they went to the
clubs. From the clubs they went to the Indian Casinos. Getting a steady gig at River Rock Casino was a large growing point
for them. From the casinos they went to the festivals. Being part of the revered Blue Wing Blues Festival 2007 for the first
time got them a great magazine interview in News From Native California. From there they took a hot tip from the great Charlie
Musselwhite, who heard them playing at River Rock Casino and saluted them, he told them to go to Clarksdale Mississippi. You
bet that they were standing at the “Crossroads” in April 2008 for the “Juke Joint Blues Festival.”
Following that Blues Trail like the old-timers did they went up North and got another big performance in June 2009 at the
Chicago Blues Festival, performing with the amazing Johnny B. Gayden on Bass Guitar. Then back home in California, they were
honored by the Bay Area Blues Society at the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame with an award for “Best New Blues Band of
2010,” the 1st Native Americans to receive an award. Onward they continue to spread the sounds of the West Coast Blues
with a hint of the Indian Beat.
The name "Twice As Good" isn't a claim of status. To
Paul & Rich it is a dedication to hard work and quality of craft. About believing in one's self, not being shy, and having
the courage to try something as hard as becoming a successful professional musician. They were once told, "You can't
make it in the music business, you got to be twice as good". So they replied, "Well all right then. We will be,
Twice As Good".
Richard
J. Steward, (Rhythm Guitar) is a Pomo Indian and a member of the Elem Indian Colony Tribe of Lake County, California. Self
taught and trained over the years by playing in several unknown bands in numerous honky tonks and dives throughout Northern
California. A life-long fan of Blues and Soul he passed that passion along to his family and children, but particularly his
youngest son. He worked many day jobs to buy more music equipment for Paul so that someday they could, "take the
show on the road"! That day is today. Along with being a Blues Man, Rich is a Native American community leader in
and around his homelands. He oversees the Lake County Indian Education Center which helps Indian children with tutoring and
after-school activities. Rich believes education is the light and the right way. Rich is also a leader in his tribe, Elem
Indian Colony, often assisting the tribe’s government. Rich & Paul’s tribe, Elem, has had a difficult history
but still Rich continues to uphold and promote a good standard of citizenship, and Stewardship, in the tribe. Rich’s
older son, Mateo, is a great man and character like his Father. He also shares the music! Mateo has been a touring manager
with the famous Rockabilly band “The Chop Tops.” Mateo plays guitar and Upright Bass in a swingin’ Rockabilly
style. In Summer 2009, Mateo played Upright Bass with Dad and Brother at the Blue Wing Saloon for Twice As Good show. Friend,
Jake Whitelaw, played drums. Mateo also sang backup vocals on the “If That’s All Right With You” album.
Of notable mention, he did make friends and hang with the great side-man Luther Tucker, back when Tucker
was gigging and living in the Bay Area. Rich's style of rhythm guitar is based from the old Blues/Jazz style of comping, inspired
by the legendary Matt "guitar" Murphy. Hence, the SG guitars. Check out his funky rhythm solo on their song "Make
It Go". Rich is also known as "Daddy Rich" or "The Father of The Blues".
Paul
Steward-(Vocals, Lead Guitar, Keyboards, Sax, Harmonica, Trumpet, Ukulele) In High School, Paul rose to prominence in his
school jazz band earning awards and praise that led to a small music scholarship to the University of Nevada, Reno. Paul enrolled
and began attending classes at UNR, but after a semester he decided for the time being to continue his education back home in
Santa Rosa. Paul current attends Sonoma State University as a Business Major/Music Minor. Paul also plays Harmonica, Keyboard,
Trumpet, Ukulele, Mandolin, Banjo, Violin and Saxophone.
Since 2003 he has performed as one half of Twice As Good
with his father. He has jammed with many great artists and musicians, picking up pointers and skills on the way, directed
the band when 2XG backed up a Temptations tribute group doing all the classic soul, then a year later, directed a country
music show of 3 great country star impersonators, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, and Charlie Daniels, also laying down some
smokin' guitar solos during each one of these shows. In May of 2007 Paul Steward got to jump on stage with Robert Randolph
& The Family Band at the Wells Fargo Center, Santa Rosa, and jam. The crowd was amazed and Paul was said to have smoked
Robert and Family, all in good fun. Then in August of 2008 Twice As Good joined with their friend Charlie Musselwhite on stage
to headline the Blue Wing Blues Festival at the historic Tallman Hotel and Blue Wing Saloon/Cafe of Upper Lake, CA. He plays
Gospel music most Sundays at the House of Refuge Christian Fellowship Church. he performed on occaison with the amazing
Bay Area Gospel group, The Kingdom Travelers. He also tore the house down in an all out "guitar & bass blues shredding
contest" with the amazing bassist Johnny B. Gayden, formerly of Albert Collins' IceBreakers. Johnny won, but gave Paul
considerable praise. In March 2010 Rich and Paul proudly accepted the West Coast Blues Award "Best New Blues Band 2010"
they are the first Native Americans to be awarded. Paul gives all the credit to his Dad who has given him the inspiration,
the opportunity, and all the help. This coming September Paul will direct his own little Big Band for a tribute
show to B.B. King. Paul will be the impersonator. It’s an 85th birthday salute to the King that Paul & Rich follow.
Whether he's diving off stages, doing the splits, or dancing his way thru the audience you'll usually catch a big
smile on his face as he is out not only to create great music but also to entertain.
